Chopped Cheese
Here in Montana, we can walk out the door and be in the mountains in minutes - but we don’t have the bodegas of NYC.
So I give you the world-famous Chopped Cheese.
A cross between a burger and a cheesesteak, but with its own distinct identity - the Chopped Chee is greasy, messy, and ridiculously satisfying with all those freshies.
Not just a sandwich, but an essential clutch meal and must-try when you’re visiting the city.
Good To Know: The ingredient amounts are enough for one giant, shareable sandwich, so you’ll want to adjust accordingly.
Oh, and wrapping this thing tight is essential, so make sure you have plenty of parchment paper to do the darn thing.
here’s what you’ll need
a hoagie roll
1/2 lb ground beef
tomato, thinly sliced
iceberg lettuce, shredded
pickled hot peppers, sliced
1/2 onion, diced
American cheese slices
Worcestershire sauce
mayo
salt
pepper
here’s what you’ll need to do
Preheat griddle to medium high heat.
Split your hoagie roll in half, making sure to keep one edge connected.
Slather bread with mayo and place on the griddle until golden and toasty.
Remove hoagie from heat and set on a stack of parchment paper to cool.
Add a drizzle of olive oil to the griddle.
Saute onion until soft and translucent.
Loosely form ground beef into a patty, seasoning both sides with salt and pepper.
Throw patty on the griddle to sear.
Once the patty is seared nicely on one side, flip it over and begin to chop into pieces with metal spatulas.
Add a good shake of Worcestershire sauce and continue cooking until browned, incorporating sautéed onions and a handful of pickled peppers as you do.
Form the fully cooked ground beef pile into the size and shape of your hoagie.
Top with American cheese slices and let sit until they begin to get melty (this should take less than a minute).
Slather hoagie with mayo.
Carefully move beef mix from the griddle to one side of the hoagie.
Top with shredded lettuce and thinly sliced tomatoes.
Pinch and close sandwich, rolling tightly (like a burrito) in parchment paper.
Cut in half, and enjoy!
