Salted Brown Butter Rice Krispies Treats
Because sometimes you just gotta.
But if you’re gonna, do yourself a favor and brown the butter for a more rich, nutty flavor, then add a splash of vanilla to your melted marshmallows, and finish it all off with a generous sprinkle of sea salt flakes.
Oh, and for the record, I also use salted butter (for literally everything).
here’s what you’ll need
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1 package (10 oz) mini marshmallows
1/2 cup butter, cubed
1 tsp vanilla extract
extra virgin olive oil spray
sea salt flakes
here’s what you’ll need to do
Lightly grease a deep-sided baking dish with olive oil spray.
Set aside.
In a large non-stick pot, melt butter over medium heat.
Continue cooking butter until it foams, turns golden, and gives off a nutty aroma. This should only take about 5 minutes.
Once butter is browned, reduce heat to low and add marshmallows.
Stir constantly until the marshmallows are melted and smooth.
Add vanilla extract, and give it another stir to combine.
Remove pot from heat and add Rice Krispies cereal.
Fold cereal and marshmallow mix together (with a rubber spatula) until fully incorporated.
Pour into your prepared baking dish.
Pro Tip: Use a piece of parchment paper to press the mix into an even layer.
Sprinkle generously with sea salt flakes, and allow to cool for about 30 minutes before cutting into squares and digging in.
Oh, and it might just be me, but I like to microwave my Rice Krispies Treat for about 15 seconds before enjoying. That said, it will be HOT and gooey - so do this at your own risk.
Whee!
